Redgrave backs Chechen envoy in extradition battle
Vanessa Redgrave has defended a senior Chechen envoy at the centre of an extradition battle against accusations he is a warlord.
Redgrave is helping Akhmed Zakaev fight attempts by Russian authorities to have him returned to the eastern European country.
Mr Zakaev was arrested when he flew into London on Thursday, but later released on bail after Ms Redgrave agreed to stand a £50,000 surety.
Ms Redgrave says her friend is “not a warlord and not a terrorist“ and that he is a highly-respected actor in his home state.
Mr Zakaev is an aide to the Chechen leader Aslan Maskhadov and an advocate of peace talks. Russia accuses Mr Zakaev of murder and rebellion.
Speaking at a press conference held at the Royal Court Theatre in central London last night, she said that traditionally in the UK there is a "desire for justice for British citizens and justice for people who are being destroyed.
"Mr Zakaev represents those people and he is one of the few people who have the political will to work for peace.
“That's precisely why the war party in the Kremlin want to silence him because they don't want peace.”
Mr Zakaev had arrived from Denmark where Russian officials attempted to have him extradited but their appeal was turned down.
They have criticised the decision in Britain to release him on bail and claim Mr Zakaev is a senior Chechen commander who helped „levy war” against Russia between October 1995 and December 2000.
