A comedy of terrors

By Zvi Bar'el

A terrorist group in Iraq has threatened to execute everyone involved in a certain Kuwaiti play. It says the work ridicules the actions of the rebels in Fallujah.

A simple story. A young Kuwaiti searches for his beloved, whom he has not seen in 14 years, and is nearly killed on his way to see her. Books have been written and movies made about far simpler tales, but they did not develop into political scandals involving a government, terror organizations, human rights activists and intellectuals.

The difference is that this story has been made into a play by prominent Kuwaiti playwright Mohammed al-Rashood. The protagonist is a young man from Kuwait, and his beloved is an Iraqi. Not coincidentally, she lives in Fallujah, the very same city in which heavy fighting between the American military and the Islamic insurgents is now taking place.

At this point, things get a bit complicated. Because two Kuwaiti youths were killed in Fallujah last month after having gone to assist the rebels in their war against the Americans. Another group of 18 Kuwaiti civilians was arrested in Fallujah last summer due to a similar attempt.

The enlistment of young people from Arab states in the war against the Americans in Iraq is a well-known phenomenon that has sparked somewhat submissive criticism in several countries, and has even been encouraged at times by fundamentalist clergymen, who see the occupation of Iraq as an attack by the infidels on holy Muslim land, and who therefore believe there is a divine commandment to oppose the invaders.

Serious hurdle

In Kuwait, the phenomenon has generated especially harsh public criticism. Kuwait, which was occupied by Saddam Hussein in the first Gulf War, has a hard time understanding its young people's eagerness to lend assistance to groups that are suspected for their connections to the Saddam regime. With this in mind, Mohammed al-Rashood had no problem getting his play okayed by the “committee for approval of texts“ in Kuwait, which is responsible for the content of works of art. But when advertisements began to appear for the play, which is also scheduled for broadcast on Kuwaiti television to mark this week's Id al-Fitr festival, it emerged that the play had to surmount one serious hurdle.

A terror group in Iraq that calls itself „Qa'idat al-Jihad” (the base of Jihad) threatened that if the play were staged, its operatives would take action against actors of al-Rashood's theater and the offices of Kuwaiti television in Baghdad — and would not hesitate to execute anyone connected to the play. Kuwaiti authorities hastened to beef up its security detail over the theater's actors, and Iraqi security are now watching the offices of Kuwaiti television in Baghdad. The terror group charges that the play ridicules the actions of the rebels in Fallujah, and even worse, describes them as heinous acts.

The criticism voiced by the terror organizations, which have been joined by several religious activists from Kuwait, is first and foremost aimed at the fact that a comedy was written about Fallujah. But the more important issue has to do with content. The love-struck Kuwaiti youth (played by the actor Walid al-Dira) who has not seen his beloved (Zainab Al Askari) for 14 years, ever since Saddam occupied Kuwait, is kidnapped in Fallujah by his beloved's cousin (the actor Ali al-Mufidi), with the intent of preventing the encounter between the lovers. The kidnapper contends that the young woman belongs to him, by virtue of his being her cousin and because he wants to marry her. The young woman's brother, who just so happens to head a terror organization, rescues the Kuwaiti.

Not only is the play constructed as a comedy of errors in which the kidnappings in Iraq are described as pointless acts that are in fact carried out for personal objectives, but the playwright himself issued a public call to young Kuwaitis not to go to Iraq, and especially not to Fallujah, until the situation calms down.

Name change

However, things didn't end there. The playwright was asked to change the name of the play from “A Kuwaiti in Fallujah“ to “Love in Fallujah,“ although he was permitted to leave the content unchanged. Why is “Love in Fallujah” less bothersome than „A Kuwaiti in Fallujah”? In all of his newspaper interviews, al-Rashood, who is also the director of a commercial theater in Kuwait, was unable to explain why, even to himself. But he also has no criticism for the state that ordered him to make the change, as „I well know what sort of burden is placed on the shoulder of the government, and what sort of responsibility it is bearing.” He only wants someone to help him handle the expenses of the change — about $10,000 — for the advertisements and television commercials he was compelled to change.

The interesting aspect of this theatrical episode is the way that terror groups conceive the importance of public opinion and the power of the theater to shape it. It turns out that the commercial theater in Kuwait, as opposed to the public theater that is barely supported by the government, perform to especially large audiences, as its plays are also broadcast on Kuwaiti television. It is usually a light-hearted, barbed theater that is not afraid to criticize the Kuwaiti government.

To the good fortune of the private theater, the Kuwaiti ministry of culture is headed by Mohammed Abu al-Hassan, the only Shi'ite minister in the Kuwaiti cabinet, who is waging a firm political struggle against Islamic movements in Kuwait, which are represented by a large group of members of parliament. Abu al-Hassan has been attacked by religious groups for “encouraging moral permissiveness,” for authorizing immoral books and for not expanding religious programming in the media.

Abu al-Hassan is supposed to be facing a parliamentary hearing this month, which could lead to his dismissal. Despite the heavy political pressure on him, Abu al-Hassan did not capitulate, and approved al-Rashood's play, even though it decries the stand of Islamic fundamentalists who continue to urge young people to volunteer for the war against the Americans in Iraq.
